DAN FOGELL

DANIEL D. FOGELL is a herpetologist as well as a Life and Human Sciences Instructor at Southeast Community College in Lincoln, Nebraska where he teaches courses in Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, General Biology, and Zoology. He earned a master’s degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha where he studied the seasonal activity, spatial ecology, and natural history of Timber Rattlesnakes in Nebraska. Current research interests are centered on the distributions of Great Plains amphibians and reptiles as well as the various factors that affect those distributions, such as habitat availability, alterations in land use, and global climate change. He has conducted field work and herpetofaunal surveys in Nebraska, Kansas, South Dakota, Iowa, and Minnesota. Dan also has a strong interest in the ecology and conservation of venomous snakes in Nebraska and Iowa—especially those populations that are at the extreme periphery of their range. He has conducted ecological studies on three different pit viper species—including Iowa’s only known population of Prairie Rattlesnakes—using radio tracking as a tool to investigate spatial ecology. In 2010 Dan published “A Field Guide to the Amphibians and Reptiles of Nebraska” which provides species accounts, photographs, and distribution maps for all 62 amphibian and reptile species native to Nebraska. He is an active member of both the Nebraska and Kansas Herpetological Societies. In addition to editing for Amphibian and Reptile Conservation, Dan is the herpetology editor for the Prairie Naturalist and has reviewed manuscripts for Copeia, the Journal of Kansas Herpetology, Great Plains Research, The Nebraska Herpetological Society Newsletter, and the Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science.
