VOLUME 6 (1) VARANID
LIZARDS
INTERNATIONAL CHAPTER - AMPHIBIAN
AND REPTILE CONSERVATION
Increased maximun temperatures threaten some lizard species in the
highly biodiverse tropical and subtropical regions. Species such as
thermoconformers in tropical forests and also live bearers have physiological
characteristics that make them particularly vulnerable to climate change. The
varanids are generally top predators with large territories and low population
densities. These charactersitics make them vulnerable to habitat loss, habitat
fragmentation, and over-harvesting, and have resulted in all monitors listed by
CITES as threatened species with many Endangered, and five species “threatened with
extinction.”

Summary:
Anthropogenic effects have increased the greenhouse effect, which has changed the climate to
produce ever increasing maximum temperatures.Increased temperatures threaten some lizard species
in highly biodiverse tropical and subtropicalregions. Some, such as thermoconformer species in
tropical forests and live bearers appear to be particularly vulnerable. Most varanids are top
predators, generally have large territories, and have low population densities, which make them
vulnerable to habitat loss, habitat fragmentation, and over-harvesting. All monitor lizards are
listed by CITES as Endangered, and five species are officially listed as “threatened with
extinction.”
